2012 Building Progress – Day 2

Today sees the snowmen get their new insides!

Firstly, removing the old inards. I’ve kept the LED’s, no idea what I will do with them but I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away. Once the original circuitry was removed, I could install the new LED boards made yesterday.

A single CAT5 cable connects two snowmen back to the controller board.

Here they are  all glued back together and numbered ready for action!

I’ve also been modifying the snowflakes used in last years display.

Red and Green LED’s are now controllable independently on separate channels.

Santa figures tomorrow!

2012 Building Progress – Day 1

The building week has started!

Today I have been constructing the LED inards for the Snowmen & Santa figures.

The original inards consist of a single colour changing LED powered by batteries. Looks very pretty, but the LED colours aren’t controllable so it has to go.

The figures have both green & red LED’s each connected to a separate channel on the Olsen 595 board for independent control. The following pictures show the construction of the new inards.

These are the LED’s that go inside each figure, two of each colour are attached to a piece of veroboard with resistors and then one of each colour have longer legs attached so they reach in to the top of the figures to provide more light.

Inards complete! Next, work out how to attach them to the window…..

Work begins on the 2012 lights!

Welcome to another year of Christmas Lights, work has already begun on this years display. Due to a change in layout at Selby College I am building a brand new display for the ICT corridor. I have made the decission to move away from ICICLE controllers, and so have built a second Olsen 595 board. If your interested, these are the reasons why.
